
Vitalii Atanasov is a Kyiv-based journalist and research analyst with 15+ years of experience in open-source research, verification, and analytical writing on Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
His work spans documenting press freedom violations across Ukraine, including conflict-affected regions, for Mapping Media Freedom / Index on Censorship; media and social-network monitoring for the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission; and long-form analytical research on digital infrastructure and information operations, published in openDemocracy, Index on Censorship, Osteuropa, and Ukrainska Pravda. He co-founded Commons: Journal of Social Criticism, produced the English-language podcast Ukraine the Possible on the impacts of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and is a trained documentary filmmaker.
Vitalii holds an MSc in Computer Science and works at the intersection of journalism and technical research — combining open-source verification methods with Python-assisted data analysis.
